Story/Content Guidelines
We seek stories about the traditional
American South -- its people, culture and history -- that encompass positive
portrayals of the Christian religious tradition of the region and its conservative
political and cultural character. Settings located outside the South
must feature Southern character(s).
Within that parameter, stories may be
of any genre (with the exceptions noted):
general/literary fiction
action-adventure
crime/detective
mystery
thriller
romance
women's fiction
western
young adult
We are not seeking stories in the fantasy,
horror or paranormal subgenres. No vampires, shapeshifters, demons
or aliens, please!
Please do not submit stories that portray
gratuitous violence. Romances must feature love stories between a man and
a woman only. They may be warm and sensual, but no erotica/romantica,
please.
Most importantly, we are not interested
in perpetuating negative Southern stereotypes (evil racists, religious
bigots/zealots, inbred idiots, philanderers, domestic abusers and/or rightwing
terrorists). Characters should possess realistic flaws but also be
decent and personable, not the repulsive regional stererotypes all too
common in pop culture. If you wish to create such characters, there are
numerous other publishers who are no doubt eager to see your portrayals.
We are not.
